In the summer of 1996, my family and I attended a flea market at the Yarmouth Mall. I was only twelve at the time, and was becoming a huge fan of lots of music, Hip Hop in particular. Among the finds was a cassette single of Heavy D & The Boyz' Now That We Found Love from 1991. That evening, upon returning home, my younger brother, 10, and I decided that we would record our own song using the instrumental track from the tape we'd just purchased. We jokingly took on the monicre of the Wu-Troy Clan, clearly a play on Wu-Tang, and also a shot at a local bum. Using two cassette decks sitting side-by side, we'd play back the cassette tape on one, and record all the racket using the other. The song, Wu-Troy Clan Is In Tha House, which in all honesty was a blatant rip-off of Grandmaster Flash's The Message, was what really got me started in the rap game. From that point on, I never stopped pursuing the writing and recording aspects of Hip Hop.It also got me to find more music from Heavy D, and I became an immediate fan. I'd have to say that my two favourite albums of his discography would have to be 1991's Peaceful Journey, which was the record which contained Now That We Found Love, as well as the powerful title track which featured K-Ci & JoJo of Jodeci, and 1997's Waterbed Hev. Today is November 8, 2011, and Heavy D has been reported to have been found dead in his LA home. A truly sad day for the family of Dwight Arrington Myers, and the Hip Hop scene as well. My thoughts, as well as the thoughts of millions of individuals around the Globe who have been touched by the music and the man that is Heavy D, go out to his family and friends alike. Although I never knew you on a personal level, it's fair to say that you had a huge impact in shaping my musical journey. Rest in peace. May you and your talents never be forgotten.
